Vacuum is the absence of Gas. It is 'destroyed' when any gas moves into a vacuum. It is also unbreathable for obvious reasons.
If a flatulent duplicant walks into an area that is only vacuum the area will inevitably be filled with Natural Gas, wearing an Atmo Suit prevents that.
Vacuum can be found naturally:
- in the Temperate Biome surrounded by Copper Ore and Coal,
- in Slickster enclosures in Oil Biome, where Carbon Dioxide is depleted,
- in the Space Biome.
- and it can be created by The Void.
Vacuum can be artificially created by using a Gas Pump to remove all gas from a completely sealed enclosure. It can also be made by filling an area with tiles, and then removing them without letting in any new air, like with a Liquid Airlock.
Tile method of vacuum-creation
To access a formerly created area of vacuum, a Gas Pump can be placed between two Airlocks (creating an actual "airlock" as known in the real world).

Vacuum can be used to prevent many kinds of heat transfer mechanisms. Gas Reservoirs and Liquid Reservoirs don't exchange any heat at all if placed in a vacuum (not even with their contents or their contents between each other). Storage Bins only exchange heat with the tile they are standing on. The Kiln has no Overheat Temperature and can create high temperatures if it is built with materials like Wolframite. Duplicants also primarily heat up by contact with surrounding gas, meaning they can pick up and deliver high-temperature resources to storage bins or buildings in vacuum. Pipes don't actually transfer heat between segments or between segments and buildings (including other pipes).
Tips[ | ]
Using an airflow tile as insulation tile. The tile above the airflow tile will remain at 20°C even if the airflow tile is way hotter.
- Despite having a temperature of absolute zero, vacuum cannot be used as a method of cooling since it does not transfer heat. However, this property makes vacuum a perfect thermal insulator.
- An Airflow Tile or a Mesh Tile "filled" with a vacuum will only take in heat from its adjacent tiles but will not "give away" heat to them - making them effectively insulated tiles (of sorts).
- Similarly, pipes surrounded with vacuum cannot exchange heat with environment. It makes their material almost irrelevant, as long as it cannot be damaged by the heat exchange with the content.
- Dupes only exhale carbon dioxide when there is oxygen to inhale, so they will not destroy a vacuum even with no atmo suits on. Conversely, Dupes wearing oxygen masks will destroy a vacuum with their exhalations.
