Meteor Shower
Some meteors falling.

Meteor Shower is a regular event that happens in the Space Biome. Space Scanners can be used to detect incoming meteor showers before they begin.

All Meteors falling also produce a lot of Carbon Dioxide, it can be harvested, but practicality is dubious.

Meteors damage any building they pass through until they hit a solid tile. Only Bunker Door, Bunker Tile, and Rockets will not take damage. Some buildings, like ladders and gantries, continue to function while broken.

On impact, meteors can damage tiles in a one tile radius. Impact damage will pass through bunker tiles and doors, so leave a gap if necessary. Other buildings are not affected by this.

Background buildings (like wires, pipes, and wallpaper) are not damaged by meteors, but the materials they are made of may still melt from heat meteors leave behind.

Finally, note that meteors arrive with an angle of +-10°, so they can still enter your silo if you omit to build a vertical wall.

Meteor seasons[ | ]

Meteors fall over the course of recurring seasons, which depend on the type of asteroid (base game) or planetoid (Spaced Out!). Some types of planetoids have different meteor seasons than others; in the base game, however, all asteroids have the same type of meteor season.

Each season repeats with a different period length, and during each season one meteor event, randomly chosen based on the season's type, will occur. The season's meteor event occurs immediately once the season begins and ends once the duration of the event has elapsed. Meteor showers occur on an on-and-off basis over the course of the event, and once the event ends no more meteor showers will occur until the season repeats and a new event starts. The type of meteor event determines the event's duration, as well as the duration of each meteor shower (and the gaps between them) plus which types of meteors can fall.

Base Game[ | ]

In the base game, all meteor seasons are of the same type, and thus only three types of meteor events are possible.

Meteor events[ | ]

Meteor events each occur over a certain duration, during which meteor showers will occur at varying intervals. The duration of the event, as well as the durations and intervals of meteor showers plus the types of meteors which can spawn during meteor showers, all depend on the type of meteor event.

Image Name Contents Description
Dust Comet Dust Meteor Nothing The weakest, smallest, and most common meteors.

They still can cause damage. Do not appear during copper season.

Iron Comet Metal Meteor 3-20 kg of Iron Iron / Copper Ore Copper Ore / Gold Amalgam Gold Amalgam / Spaced Out Banner Fullerene Fullerene @240°C - 420°C Their content depends on season.

Metal Meteors hit the hardest and will destroy tiles.

The Color depends on what metal it's made of.

  • Iron Comet: Purple
  • Copper Comet: Red
  • Gold Comet: Green
  • Fullerene Comet: White
Rock Comet Rock Meteor 4.8-7.2 t of Regolith Regolith @240°C - 420°C The largest meteor.

Does not destroy tiles.

Difficulty[ | ]

The difficulty setting of meteor showers can be changed during world creation, and has the following effects on the parameters of meteor showers:

Parameter Clear Skies Spring Showers Default Cosmic Storm Doomsday
Meteor Season Period n/a 2x 1x 2x 1x
Meteor Event Calm Period n/a 1x 1x 1x 0.5x
Meteor Interval n/a 1.5x 1x 1.5x 0.5x
Meteor Mass n/a 1x 1x 1x 0.5x
Total # of Meteors
Over Time (Approx.)
None 33.33% 100% 33.33% 400%

Notes[ | ]

  • As shown in the above table, the "Cosmic Storm" difficulty actually decreases the difficulty of meteor showers compared to the default; it is effectively exactly the same as the "Spring Showers" difficulty.

Trivia[ | ]

  • ONI Meteors are technically Meteorites since they hit the asteroid instead of vaporizing, yet they are also referred to as Comets in the game's innards (sandbox mode and code).
